THE PIN PROJECT
Collaborate Project With Hanzhang (Chris) Cao
As college students, we heard a lot of complaints from my friends about making furniture choices for their dorms or rented houses. And most of them need to move frequently, mostly like once a year. So we would ask how we can help with this problem through design.
Most of the yound adults can only afford a small living space and most of them choose to live in a shared space. Many of them need to move annually based on lease and work change. And many of their living space need more storage areas. They also have a need of socialing and hosting friends.
As the starting point, we tried to make quick sketch models to see how we could take apart different furniture and how different furniture could be combined together to get extra functions.
As for our final design, we decided to make a furniture system that incorporates three modules: module 1 as a storage unit also, as a seat, module 2 as a bookshelf, and module 3 as a coffee table as a house for module 1. We also tried to develop a universal connection system that easily assembles the modules.
The PIN furniture series has a universal connection system that uses the rod as the main structure, with two caps on each end. The cap has a magnet in the middle to help connect with other units and a D-ring to add more grip area while assembling.
Through the universal connection system, the PIN furniture series could be combined as users wish. And due to this small base size, these combinations could fit in different rooms and grow as the need grows.
